What Jeremiah says: Eckhart Tolle is a modern day spiritual guru, but of course, he would not call himself that. When Oprah did a webinar for his most recent book at the time, A New Earth, millions of people tuned into watch and learn. Tolle is a delight to watch on-stage and mesmerizing to listen to. There’s something that’s communicated between the words in both his books and his presentation. I remember watching something of his where he was talking about soccer (or football, depending on where you stand on that particular debate) players who waited a full second before kicking the ball on a penalty kick were more successful than those who did not.

What Jeremiah Says: I read this book on a recommendation from my partner, Kelly, while we were spending time in the back-country of New Zealand. Wow! I did not expect to find the book so readable. Stephen Bodian writes differently than most other ‘spiritual gurus’ do on the same topics because he approaches the topics from a psychological standpoint, too, given his background in psychotherapy. This is a great book with lots of exercises designed to help the reader understand the difference between their mind and them.

What Jeremiah says: The Ringing Cedars Series is a set of books that quite frankly, changed my life. I was introduced to them a few years ago and they immediately precipitated massive changes in my life. The are written by a Russian entrepreneur who initially (as you’ll read in Book 1), was trying to make a living. On his travels, he heard about this woman, Anastasia, who lived in the Siberian Taiga. He found his way to her and when he did, Anastasia told him that he was going to write 9 books. Vladimir, the entrepreneur, laughed at her and told her that he was no writer. Anastasia told him that this was no problem as she was going to tell her story through him and that she would infuse the words such that they would sell millions of copies. Anastasia has an extremely unique perspective because she is the ‘fish out of water’ looking in on the way our society operates. She has rare views on education, parenting, religion, sexuality, gardening, and much more. Nine books and millions of copies translated into multiple languages later, I give you – The Ringing Cedars Series. [While the 1st edition's have beautiful cover art, the 2nd edition's seem to have much more in the way of informative footnotes for helping to understand the Russian translation.]

What Jeremiah says: Definitely one of the books that shaped the ’90s. James Redfield wrote a few other books after The Celestine Prophecy, but none were as popular as his first. When this book first came out, you could hear people talking about it over the water cooler’s as it quickly soared to the top of the New York Times’ Bestseller List. People talked about “poor me’s,” people playing “aloof,” and “interrogators.” Redfield takes the reader along with his main character on a journey of spiritual awakening, while on an adventure in Peru.

What Jeremiah Says: A set of books that I was exposed to, in part by my partner, but also through a classmate at ITP. The author, Byron Katie is a very lovable person. If you watch some of her videos on YouTube, you’ll soon understand what I mean. In any of the books that I’ve read by Katie, it’s clear that she has stumbled upon a way of being in the world that is so peaceful that it makes you wonder how there could ever not be peace. Her method is so simple and at the same time, so profound. Her books come highly recommended!

What Jeremiah Says: John Mabry is a wonderful professor, orator, and pastor. I was fortunate enough to take two classes with him during my time as a student at ITP. He knows so much about the world religions as he’s spent the better part of his life learning about them. In this book, Faith Styles, Mabry presents a point of view that runs concurrent to religions and demonstrates a way to understand people regardless of religion. The model he presents is not hierarchical, but on level ground. He also explains how people can move from one kind of faith style to another and then back again.
